Nintendo 3DS, offering glasses-free 3D gaming in the palm of your hand. Obviously, the stereoscopic effect doesn't translate to large plasma screens, but a montage of titles already signed up for the new device is immediately impressive. A revival of ancient NES series Kid Icarus makes it clear that graphically, the 3DS is far more advanced than its predecessor. A Gamecube in your hand is how some have described it, and that seems about right. It looks pretty stunning.
Also headed for three dimensions on the 3DS: Nintendogs, DJ Hero, Kingdom Hearts, Saints Row, Madden, Samurai Warriors, Batman, Resident Evil, Assassin's Creed, Ridge Racer and Metal Gear Solid. That's a hell of a line up.
The console itself is small and lightweight, and has both a touch screen and an analogue control nub. A slider allows you to turn the 3D on or off. It even has two cameras, so you can take your own 3D snaps. Cool. The conference ends with a veritable army of attractive young women, each chained to a brand new 3DS, walking out into the audience and leading them all away to a secret location to experience the 3D effect first hand. Judging from some quick vox pops afterwards, it's worth the wait. People are impressed. No word on a release date or price, frustratingly. We want one now.
